The X Factor final: it's wide open

MediaGuardian's Stephen Brook will be doing a live blog on Saturday's grand final of The X Factor, but we can already reveal some of the surprises that are in store, writes Helienne Lindvall. So if you don't want to know, stop reading now.

In this year's final, the remaining contestants are pulling in some star power to help them muscle their way ahead.

Each finalist will do a duet, and Leon seems to have drawn the longest straw by being matched with Kylie Minogue. Same Difference will be singing with Kylie's ex, Jason Donovan, and Rhydian will be performing with opera star Katherine Jenkins.

It's an interesting, if slightly controversial, idea. Will it work for or against Leon to be matched with the most famous of the three stars? Will Kylie outshine the young Scot and expose his still unconquered nerves or will she make his performance the most memorable?

The choice of Katherine Jenkins for Rhydian seems like an obvious one, since they appeal to the same type of audience - and are both, er... Welsh. But Same Difference and Jason Donovan? Jason is more known for appearing on I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here than for his singing these days, and Same Difference's core audience of pre-teens have most likely never even heard of him.

Apart from these duets, the finalists will each perform a Christmas song and a Favourite song. Same Differences have chosen All I Want For Christmas and Breaking Free. Rhydian has, quite predictably, gone for O Holy Night and Somewhere, and Leon, equally predictable, has chosen White Christmas and You Don't Know Me.

The winner's single - and, dare I say, Christmas number one - is the Mariah Carey/Whitney Houston duet When You Believe. I'm almost tempted to pick up the phone and vote for Same Difference just to see how they'll tackle that one.

Like Big Brother, The X Factor has realised that they need to up the stakes with each series, to stop people from switching off. They've certainly managed to keep my attention this year. More than any previous time, the race is wide open and I can't wait to see who finishes first.
