The wreckage left after 'nasty' M6 crash which van driver was lucky to escape

This image shows the wreckage left behind after a van hit the back of a lorry on the M6 - which the driver luckily escaped with minor injuries.

A lane was closed on the southbound carriageway near Wigan earlier today (September 20) following the crash, which caused delays of more than four miles during rush hour.

The crash involved a lorry and a van between junction 26 at the Orrell Interchange and junction 25 for Bryn - part of the road which is currently hit by roadworks to transform it into a smart motorway.

The photo, posted by Merseyside Police's roads policing unit, shows the damage caused to the van - a white Ford Transit - after hitting the back of a red lorry.

Describing the collision as 'nasty', police say the driver had crashed into the back of stationary traffic on the M6.

The driver has since been reported for careless driving, and Merseyside Police has issued the photograph to remind drivers of the need to watch the road ahead.

In a post on Twitter, a spokesperson for Merseyside Police's roads policing unit said: "Patrols dealt with a nasty rear end shunt early this morning on the M6.

"Driver collided into the rear of stationary traffic. Fortunately minor injury only.

"If this isn’t a reminder to observe the road ahead, I don’t know what is.

"Driver reported for careless driving."
