BHOPAL: Roads in Bhopal give a clear indication of the terrible situation commuters face every day. And with monsoon just at the city doorstep, things are bound to get worse once it starts to rain.
The road in Rohit Nagar is full of potholes and craters. In the name of repair, the authorities have just filled them with dust and boulders. The shoddy work infact poses greater risk to commuters than the craters and potholes. Commuting on the road would be more risky particularly in the night. The authorities said they are instead busy tarring a road connecting Rohit Nagar to Hoshangabad Road. “In the name of pre-monsoon repairing, they have filled the potholes with boulders making things worse for commuters,” said a shopkeeper in the area.
The road ahead of Aura Mall has the same story. Even short spells of rain in the last couple of days have already led to water logging here.
The service lanes connecting colonies to the main road are the most ignored. They are in bad condition to say the least. Potholes have already turned the service lanes risky for commuters.
As former chief engineer of PWD, V K Amar, pointed out that small potholes if not filled ahead of monsoon become bigger as the monsoon proceeds, and starts posing problems to the commuters.
Residents of Shahpura, different colonies of Kolar area, Chuna Bhatti and even Arera Colony, which largely has good road, face problems when it comes to commuting on the service lanes and the problem will continue to persist this season too as patch work and tarring, which has been done in some areas ahead of monsoon, is limited to main roads.
Chief engineer, PWD, Sanjay Muske, however, maintained that PWD roads are largely in good condition and wherever patchwork or tarring was required, it was done. He, however, said that in some areas there could be problems where BMC is laying the pipeline and restoration of roads has not been done.
Commissioner, BMC, K V S Kolsani, said that BMC has repaired roads under its control ahead of monsoon as far as possible. There may be some roads left and if we get a chance, we shall cover them, too, he said.
