The worst hotspots for housebreakings in Edinburgh since lockdown began

Unfortunately, despite an international pandemic, it hasn't stopped burglars and thieves from continuing to carry out housebreakings in and around Edinburgh.

Since March 23 2020, a huge number of different breaking and entering crimes have been carried out in the capital, from homes to other private property.

According to information obtained by Edinburgh Live, a total of 1,495 have been attempted over the last 10 months in a host of locations all over the city.

The most common type of housebreaking is shown to have involved theft, with nearly 400 cases of thieves breaking into a shed or external building attached to a home.

However, it appears that there are some areas in which a housebreaking appears to be more common, with some reporting around 50 incidents, while others report just eight.

In the last year, some of the top housebreaking hotspots were around Craigentinny, Lochend and Restalrig, with around 50 cases recorded by police.

The area encompassing places such as Pilton, Granton and Wardieburn also saw similar numbers, as did Newington and The Grange.

However, despite such high numbers in some places, others had very low rates since the pandemic began.

The police area code encompassing areas such as Muirhouse and Craigroyston recorded only 12 incidents since the end of March 2020, with Drylaw and Hillpark also reporting the same figure.

Colinton Mains, Firhill and Oxgangs also had just 11 housebreakings between them, with the area around Morningside and Churchill reporting the lowest figure of just eight incidents.
