'The worst day of my life': Sister tells court of losing brother in execution-style killing

The teenage sister of a man who was murdered in southern Tasmania last year says she fell to the ground "screaming and crying" when she found out about his death.

Jarrod Leigh Turner's body was found on the side of Colebrook Road in Richmond in April last year.

The 22-year-old Hobart father of two had a single gunshot wound to the head.

Shannon Duffy, 31, was arrested five days later and pleaded guilty to murder in February.

Mr Turner's 15-year-old sister Lakeisha Pearce cried as she spoke about the loss of her brother at Duffy's hearing in the Supreme Court in Hobart today.

She described her brother as a "father figure", saying she still could not believe he was gone.

"The day I found out about Jarrod was the worst day of my life. Apart from the funeral," she said.

"I didn't want to say goodbye. I kept holding his cold hands, kissing his forehead and screaming for him to come back. I just want him to come home."

She said it played on her mind every day.

"I dream that he's still here and then I wake up and realise it's just a dream and I cry," she said.

"My head hurts from thinking about it all the time. My heart hurts from heartbreak and my eyes hurt from crying all the time."

Killer decided against murder at beach after Snapchat video uploaded

The court heard Duffy and Mr Turner had been close friends for a "long time" and were living together before Mr Turner's death.

On the day he was killed, Duffy and Mr Turner spent hours driving around together. About 2:30am, they visited Five Mile Beach on Hobart's Eastern Shore where Mr Turner uploaded a video to social media platform Snapchat of the two of them drinking.

Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Linda Mason SC told the court Duffy had intended to shoot Mr Turner at the beach but decided against it when he noticed Mr Turner's Snapchat video.

Ms Mason said that about an hour later, the two pulled over to urinate, and Duffy came up behind Mr Turner, placed the gun underneath his ear and fired.

She said Duffy drove off, leaving Mr Turner face down on the ground where he was found later that day.

The court heard Duffy then went to lengths to destroy any evidence and disposed of the gun, which has never been recovered.

Ms Mason said Duffy had initially claimed he only meant to scare Mr Turner and that the trigger went off by accident.

He later changed his story and told police he had decided to kill Mr Turner after the teenage girl Duffy was in a relationship with told him Mr Turner had made "inappropriate sexual advances towards her".

"I went out there to shoot him and I shot him. That's the honest truth, what I've said now," Duffy said in a police interview, the court heard.

The hearing, before Justice Michael Brett, has been adjourned. The court will hear submissions from Duffy's lawyer at a later date.
