The worst Covid-19 hotspots in Greater Manchester

Covid-19 cases are rising rapidly in central areas of Manchester.

Neighbourhoods around New Islington, Miles Platting and Collyhurst have the highest coronavirus infection rates in Greater Manchester, latest figures reveal.

Case rates also remain high in Oldham, which has consistently registered the highest figures in the region in recent days.

Covid 'hotspots' can be revealed via an interactive map charting the number of positive Covid-19 test results in each neighbourhood across the country using Office for National Statistics (ONS) data.

The map reveals the number of coronavirus infections per 'neighbourhood' per 100,000 people in the week ending June 22.

Areas in dark purple are those with the highest current rates. These are the locations with more than 800 cases per 100,000 of the population living there.

Neighbourhoods with an infection rate above 400 per 100,000 people are shaded in a lighter purple.

When it publishes data about Covid infections in the UK, Public Health England divides towns into Middle Super Output Areas (MSOAs).

These are small areas with populations of around 7,000 people and are used to give a more precise picture of infections in certain places.

Currently the New Islington & Miles Platting MSOA has the highest infection rates in Geater Manchester, with 1,120.9 people out of every 100,000 testing positive.

City Centre North & Collyhurst is not far behind with 1,074 cases per 100,000 and Hulme Park & St George's, in South Manchester, has a rate of 1,015.8.

The only other borough with rates over 1,000 per 100,000 people is Oldham where Wood End (1,064.9) and Clough & Shaw Side (1,057.8) have both recorded extremely high infection rates.

Last week, Andy Burnham said that the North West is "coming through" the worst of the Delta strain.
