The worrying statistic that will concern Newcastle United fans after Manchester United defeat

Newcastle United are licking their wounds after a disappointing 4-1 defeat to Manchester United on Saturday night.

The Magpies took an early lead through Luke Shaw's own goal but were quickly pegged back by Harry Maguire's header.

Three goals in the final five minutes from Bruno Fernandes, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Marcus Rashford made sure of the point, with Fernandes also seeing a penalty saved by Karl Darlow.

In truth, the late goals were just rewards for a dominant second-half performance from Manchester United, with Newcastle struggling to lay a glove on a team coming off the back of a 6-1 defeat to Tottenham before the international break.

Having conceded nine goals in their opening five Premier League matches this season, there has been concern over the Magpies' backline.

Darlow has been in splendid form since stepping in for the injured Martin Dubravka but injuries at centre-back have led to chopping and changing at the back.

The most worrying statistic is the number of shots Newcastle are allowing on their goal, which could suggest a problem with the midfield balance.

Newcastle United currently allowing shots at a rate of 17.2, after Saturday's defeat to Manchester United.

The last Premier League team to surpass that over a season was Sunderland in 2016/17, who were relegated as the division's bottom club and conceded 69 goals in the process, an average of almost two per match.

Whilst Newcastle are currently 11th in the table, they will need to sharpen up with a tricky run of fixture coming in the next few weeks.
