The worrying sign from Watford's last win at St James Park highlights Newcastle's problems

Newcastle United host Watford at St James' Park this weekend but there's a worrying statistic from the Hornet's last win on Tyneside.

Eddie Howe could name six of the players in the starting line-up this weekend, who featured in the 3-0 defeat back in 2017.

It's the alarming evidence - if any was needed - into the lack of funding into Newcastle's squad over the years.

Ciaran Clark, Javier Manquillo, Jonjo Shelvey, Matt Ritchie, Jacob Murphy and Dwight Gayle all featured for the Magpies that day, with goalkeeper Karl Darlow on the bench.

Dwight Gayle missed Newcastle's defeat against Cambridge United in the FA Cup and it's unclear whether he'll feature this weekend.

The six aforementioned players have been used by Howe in some capacity this season and could be used against Watford this weekend.

The Hornets have been relegated to the Championship and promoted back to the Premier League since their last win at St James' Park, but their squad has a vastly different look to it.

Tom Cleverly and Christian Kabasele are the only survivors in the Watford starting XI from that day, while Rob Elliot has swapped the Black and White of Newcastle for the Yellow and Black of Claudio Ranieri's side.

The Premier League-winning manager is yet to taste victory since arriving at Vicarage Road, but knows this weekend's game is a crucial one for both sides.
