The worrying Dan Biggar injury news as Wales player fails HIA

Dan Biggar has failed a Head Injury Assessment (HIA) during Australia v Wales and could be a doubt for the next match against Fiji.

Biggar will now be assessed this week to check on his progress and will have to go through return-to-play protocols.

He put his body on the line to stop Samu Kerevi with a tackle, but paid the price by having to depart for a HIA after what appeared to be contact between the Wallaby and Biggar's head.

Biggar received medical treatment on the field and departed the field for the assessment after 29 minutes, with replacement No 10 Rhys Patchell coming on in his place.

As the second half of the game in Tokyo got underway, it was later confirmed that the replacement was permanent.

Biggar will now be assessed during the coming week and will have to follow stringent protocol.

Wales' next Rugby World Cup game, against Fiji, comes in 10 days' time on Wednesday, October 9, in Oita, before Wales' final group stage clash against Uruguay four days later on Sunday, October 13.

Watch here as the match unfolded:

It is important to remember that a HIA does not diagnose a concussion, it is simply a tool to help doctors identify a suspected concussion.

Any player who is sent for a HIA will then be monitored for the next few days even if they are cleared to continue playing after no concussion was detected during the HIA.

As explained by World Rugby: “Any player who undertakes an HIA (irrespective of the result) must undertake a further clinical assessment supported by the SCAT 3 immediately after the match and again at 36-48 hours – it is during this period that the diagnosis occurs.”
