The world’s 'most remote' Airbnb lets you stay with a family of reindeer herders in Mongolia

A new listing on Airbnb has been dubbed the ‘world’s most remote’ as it involves sleeping in a forest in northern Mongolia.

The two-night-and-three-day experience involves staying with a Dukha family in the Mongolian taiga (snow forest) and helping them herd their reindeer.

For just £93 per night, guests can sleep in their own traditional tepee, which features two wooden beds and sleeping bags. Whilst there are no bathroom or toilet facilities available, guests get to enjoy three meals a day cooked for them by their hosts on a open fire stove.

The key ingredients used in dishes are meat and noodles, so those with special dietary requirements are advised to bring their own food.

As the Dukha people are nomadic and move around the forest, Airbnb have teamed up with London-based location company What3words to track where hosts are situated from day to day.

Working with the Ministry of Environment and Tourism in Mongolia too, Airbnb have also provided hospitality training to Dukhas wanting to show visitors their way of life.

So far, there has only been one review of the experience from a user called Cameron. He said: “Not only is the most remote Airbnb in the world, the reindeer herding family actually meets your group on horseback and reindeer to ascend the mountain to the tepee camp.

“Once there you are greeted by the whole family and a freshly made reindeer milk tea is a once in a lifetime experience. If you like high thread count linens and perfume soap in the bathroom - this is not the listing for you. Worth the journey... ...come a stranger, leave as part of the family.”
