The world's largest passenger plane was forced to make an emergency landing at Manchester Airport

One of the world's largest passenger planes was forced to make a emergency landing at Manchester Airport after a medical emergency onboard.

The Airbus A380 was bound for New York from Abu Dhabi yesterday.

But when a passenger fell ill as it was flying over the north Atlantic west of Iceland, it was forced to turn back towards the United Kingdom.

Flight tracking website FlightRadar24 shows the Etihad Airways flight performing a u-turn about 11 hours into the journey before heading to Manchester Airport, where it landed at about 7pm UK time.

Witnesses reported seeing ambulances waiting on the runway for the superjumbo - the world's largest passenger plane  - to land.

After the passenger was treated the flight, which had 474 passengers onboard, carried on New York.
