This story is set in the future, after the The Melting, when the sea levels rose and swallowed up most of the world. The only part left the humans know of is a place called Ark, built by John Noa, the leader of the known world.
Letta is an apprentice wordsmith to Benjamin, her guardian ever since her parents went out to search for new land and never came back. Her world is a place without proper language, art or music. All have been banned by Noa. Everyone has to speak List, their strict language, and it is her job to give people the words they need.
When Benjamin is discovered dead, and a young desecrator (creator of art and music) is shot on her doorstep, she begins to question the life she lives. Working undercover, she discovers John Noa’s insidious plan to rid the world of language.
This book is important because it targets the dangers of global warming and the power of communication, love and expression. Without these words that we have, our lives would be unimaginably different. I would definitely recommend this book to all keen readers out there.
