The words and phrases that are hardest for Scots to pronounce

If you follow any Scottish people on TikTok or indeed on other social media platforms, you'll know the subject of words and phrases we struggle to say comes up regularly.

Hugely popular TikTok star Sully (rsullivan1991) and vloggers like Wee Scottish Lass on Youtube have created some hilarious videos showing the results of their own attempts.

The most popular of these phrases, "Purple Burglar Alarm", is a well-known one that often trips up anyone with a Scottish accent.

While the second and less known one is "Irish Wrist Watch", which also results in some genuinely funny attempts to pronounce them properly.

Other examples include the name "Carl", which Scots will always pronounce as "Carol"; Poem, which we will say "Po-yum"; and "Curly Wurly", which is just funny to say.

Words and phrases Scots struggle to say aloud (apparently):

Carl

Poem

Burglar alarm

Irish Wrist Watch

Ibuprofen

Curly Wurly

Generally

Vulnerability

Tarantula Burger

Vocabulary

Jewellery

Medium

Bonus:

If you say Space Ghetto in an American accent it sounds like you're saying Spice Girl in a Scottish one.
