The wonderful way a heartbroken family are trying to keep a 20-year-old's memory alive

The family of a 20-year-old man who died in a crash earlier this month have organised a blood drive in his memory.

Ryan James Hamer was taken to hospital with life threatening injuries after the car he was travelling in with three other men collided on the A4059 between Aberdare and Mountain Ash in the early hours of Sunday, April 14.

Mr Hamer - who has been previously described as a " a wonderful son, brother, uncle and boyfriend " in a family tribute - died as a result of his injuries on the same day.

His family have now organised a blood drive to honour the 20-year-old's memory while supporting the emergency services, as a thank you for their efforts in attempting to save Mr Hamer.

Mr Hamer's cousin Anna Boase said that after the crash Mr Hamer was taken to a hospital in Cardiff , where he received eight units of blood. However, he wasn't able to survive because of the serious injuries caused by the crash.

She said: "Because they [the emergency services] were there for him we wanted to make sure, if anyone was in a similar situation as him, there would be enough blood for them.

"We just want to raise more awareness."

The 29-year-old said the first blood drive was on Friday, April 26 in Mountain Ash when, in just one day, there were 39 donors. Ryan's sister, Bethan, bought roses and made badges for all of the donors, she continued.

"She only made 20 because we were not expecting such a huge turnout," Ms Boase continued. "We were all very touched by how many people turned up.

"We have been overwhelmed with the support from the local and wider community in Mountain Ash.

"People have also been donating blood all over Wales and England in Ryan's memory. We believe over 100 people have now booked an appointment for Ryan.

"If any of the blood units we raise helps another family, that is all that matters."

Ms Boase said the family are still in shock after Mr Hamer's death, but said the support they have had from the community has been amazing.

"It has been awful," she added. "He lived in Mountain Ash all his life so everyone that knew the family has been very upset by it all.

"Ryan was an adventurous, energetic and passionate person who loved snow boarding and played the drums in his band Rapture.

"He is immensely missed by all who knew him - he touched the hearts and made every person he met smile with his infectious smile and kind heart.

"He was a swimming and fitness instructor in the local sports centre so the whole community has been impacted by his death."

She added: "Join our family in remembering Ryan, and donate blood to aid others in need.

"Our hope from this blood drive is to keep Ryan's name alive and to make sure there is always a blood supply for anyone in need."
