The WonderBar in Newcastle opens its doors - and here's what makes it so unique

Interactive darts and some German oompah-style fun are out to tempt customers to Newcastle's newest bar.

The WonderBar in The Gate aims to be an all-round people pleaser as it launches with a focus on providing good value and entertainment as well as bringing what it says is a first in the city.

And that first is interactive darts - an idea which apparently is already a hit in London - which invites groups to book a slot for a game or several.

Dart boards run the length of a wall inside The WonderBar which occupies the building where the former Bar Beyond stood, as well as that of the former Opera bar next door.

Run by the owner of Colonel Porter's on Dean Street , this is a new concept and a trial night on Wednesday - which saw crowds arrive in response to an invitation on Facebook - proved a huge late-night success (and the licence allows opening until 3am) with many students turning up to try it out.

Customers can pre-book a time slot online for a darts game and, once their booking reference is keyed in, their names are registered and photographs taken which then appear on a screen above the dart board when they take their turn in the game.

Nearby is an open kitchen serving the likes of hanging kebabs and pizzas alongside pub classics. And upstairs regulars of the former Bar Beyond will notice huge changes, with the gallery now gone and the spacious floor area given over to long wooden tables and bench seating.

While there are two big screens here for live sport action, as well as football coverage that was popular in the old bar, it's here that new weekly Bier Keller-type entertainment nights will take place.

The menu takes on a more German twist upstairs too, with the likes of bockwurst sausages and beers, while a Bavarian Stompers band will get the party going every Friday and Saturday night while staff don the lederhosen.

Live music and bingo nights will also be a part of the programme and, besides plans for Christmas, the bar offers a range of dart/food packages.

While set to appeal to a wide new audience, The WonderBar is keen to welcome back the former regulars of Bar Beyond with the return of the popular breakfast bargains; this time offering the likes of a bacon sandwich and refillable coffees for £2.49, said marketing manager Emma Hill.

Pint of beer - and there's a new Wonderbeer - start at £2.99 and among the deals is an offer of a free bottle of Prosecco for those booking an after-work darts session between 4pm and 7pm from Monday to Thursday.
