While it would be easy to assume indie rock band The Wombats are Australian, the English three-piece, who hail from Liverpool, took their band name from their favourite insult from their university years . “We’d be in student halls listening to the Smashing Pumpkins... and we’d just say, “you stupid wombat” to each other,” the band’s frontman Matthew Murphy told The Independent.
They made their Australian debut in 2008, with their album: A Guide to Love, Loss and Depression, while their second album This Modern Glitch, chronicled Murphy’s mental battle with depression. Their recent third album, Glitterbug (2015) has more sequenced dance rhythms than their previous indie rock songs, although they are sure to bring all the tunes to the Aussie stage this summer, supported by Brisbane outfit The Last Dinosaurs.
