The woman behind one of Salford's mysterious post box 'hats'

A mum-of-two is behind one of the mysterious knitted post box 'hats' that have been popping up in Salford.

Sarah Sharples from Swinton is one of the people who has hopped on the trend of knitting beautiful hats for post boxes in the country.

Its origins come from the Facebook group called ‘Random Acts of Crochet Kindess’ which was set up to put a smile on people’s face during the pandemic.

An avid knitter, Sarah has already been using her hobby to lift people’s spirits.

So far, Sarah has only knitted one post box hat, found at Branksome Drive in Swinton, however, others have been spotted in and around Salford by other people who have so far remained anonymous.

With the help of her sons, last year, she created little hearts with the message ‘sending love in tough times at the door handles of her neighbours and she also hid knitted miniature animals around Media City and Lightoaks Park for kids to find.

Sarah, 38, says she has been overwhelmed at the positive response to her creations and how she jumped at the chance to make her neighbourhood brighter when she found random acts of Crochet on Facebook.

She said: “I’ve crocheted for six years and I saw a post about the hats and thought that would be a nice thing to do.

“But I didn’t expect anything like the comments I’ve received.

“It's lovely to see the comments from people saying it’s really cheered them up and brightened their neighbourhood.

“Crochet has helped me through the pandemic, it’s been a great way for me to give something back to the community but it has also kept me busy."

Sarah plans on creating two hundred hearts for local people on 22 May as part of #aheart4mcr, an initiative that will see people putting hearts all over Manchester in memory of the Arena bombing victims.
