The Wolves star who turned down West Ham summer transfer ahead of Premier League fixture

Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Matheus Nunes has been a regular for the Old Gold this season after leaving Portuguese giants Sporting CP in the summer.

The 24-year-old Brazil-born Portugal international was in the Portuguese squad at the 2022 World Cup, featuring in two of their five matches at the tournament alongside former Manchester United and Real Madrid striker Cristiano Ronaldo.

Nunes joined Wolves in August for a club-record fee of around £38m and since then, has featured in 15 of his side’s 16 Premier League games, a run that is included 13 starts in the heart of Wolves’ midfield.

Nunes had been linked with interest from Chelsea and Liverpool prior to joining Wolves, but he also had interest from West Ham United .

In August, Moyes confirmed that the Hammers had bid to sign Nunes, but the midfielder chose not to join the club, instead joining Wolves later in the summer window.

“Yes, we bid for him, but the boy chose not to come,” Moyes said back in August .

On Saturday, Nunes will line up with his Wolves teammates to face the Hammers in what will be his second appearance this season against the club who wanted to sign him five months ago.

Nunes started on October 1 when Wolves faced West Ham at the London Stadium, a game when goals from Gianluca Scamacca and Jarrod Bowen earned the Hammers a 2-0 win.

This time, Nunes will hope to be on the winning side when he takes on David Moyes’ men, who have picked up just one point out of a possible 21 from their last seven league matches.

The game has plenty of sub-plots to it based on recent links in the transfer window. West Ham are willing to listen to offers for centre-back Craig Dawson this month, providing they can sign a replacement. Dawson almost joined Wolves in the summer, only for the move to fall through late on.

Wolves have also been credited with an interest in signing striker Michail Antonio this month.
