'The Witcher' season 4: Release date, teaser trailer, and everything we know so far

Geralt (Liam Hemsworth) in a scene from "The Witcher" season 4 on Netflix.

Netflix's "The Witcher" is almost back on our screens, and is due to mark a major change for the series: Henry Cavill is out, and new Witcher Liam Hemsworth is strapping on his swords in Cavill's place.

"The Witcher" has consistently been one of Netflix's most popular shows, spawning both prequel series "The Witcher: Blood Origin" and two animated movies ("The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf", "The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep") in the process... but can it weather such a significant change?

After a long period of little info, Netflix dropped a "The Witcher" season 4 release date back in September. It sees Hemsworth battling with a supernatural foe. Here's everything that we know about "The Witcher" season 4 right now as we count down the days to its October release.

"The Witcher" season 4 will premiere on Netflix on Thursday, October 30, 2025, which is only slightly later than our assumed summer 2025 release window. And as Netflix hasn't specified that this is "Part 1," we're guessing that means the entire season will drop at once at the end of the month.

The big Geralt transition has been a long time coming: Liam Hemsworth's casting was announced back in October 2022, before the third season even premiered.

Production on the show's penultimate season subsequently got underway in April 2024, and since the fifth and final series was filmed back-to-back with this one, there's even a chance the gap between seasons 4 and 5 could be a little shorter (filming apparently wrapped at the end of September, per Witcher fansite Redanian Intelligence).

'The Witcher' season 4 trailer

While Netflix had previously dropped a moody-looking teaser showing Hemsworth in Geralt's garb, in September, we finally got a real teaser for "The Witcher" season 4.

In it, Geralt and his followers cross paths with a wraith. After being dragged around by the supernatural foe, he deploys some quick thinking (and a Witcher sign) to outfox the entity and quite literally rip out its heart.

Before that, the streaming service teased us with a First Look teaser released over a year ago, wherein Geralt and Roach wander through a dark swamp. Something stops the Butcher of Blaviken in his tracks, prompting him to turn around and reveal Hemsworth's Geralt to the world. Check it out below:

Hemsworth is the most significant addition to the cast for "The Witcher" season 4, but there are some other big names coming on board as well. Laurence Fishburne will be playing Regis, a character familiar to readers of "The Witcher" novels and players of the enormously popular "Witcher" video games. He's a barber and surgeon who's holding onto some secrets and will become entangled with Geralt in the new season.

Other new additions this season include Sharlto Copley as bounty hunter Leo Banhart, James Purefoy as court advisor and spy Skellen, and Danny Woodburn as the dwarf Zoltan. They join the already sprawling cast of characters spread across the expansive world of the Continent.

Cavill's not the only person who has departed the series, either: Vesemir actor Kim Bodnia has also bade farewell to Netflix's fantasy saga. This news was confirmed by RadioTimes.com.

A spokesperson told the outlet that Bodnia's busy schedule meant he was unable to return. Apple TV Plus subscribers might have spotted him in Brad Pitt's summer blockbuster, "F1".

'The Witcher' season 4 plot

Netflix has confirmed the show's final two seasons will cover the remaining novels in Andrzej Sapkowski's original "Witcher Saga" (not including the new standalone, "Crossroads of Ravens").

That leaves plot elements from three books to be adapted into the two upcoming seasons, which is a lot of material to pack in. Plus, Netflix's version of events has already veered away from the source material in the past, so there's a chance the show's final installments could head in a different direction.

For now, there are plenty of plot elements for "The Witcher" to pick up on from the end of Season 3. Geralt has embarked on a mission to save Ciri (Freya Allan), who has found her own new allies with a group of young outcasts known as the Rats. She's also given up the powers she previously possessed, which may or may not return in the new season. Geralt will have added support in his efforts to track down Ciri, thanks to the bard Jaskier (Joey Batey) and the archer Milva (Meng'er Zhang), who joined up with him at the end of season 3.

"This is the beginning of what fans [of the books] will know as the Hanza. It’s the group traveling with Geralt for the rest of the books. This becomes his newfound family," Schmidt Hissrich told Netflix's Tudum. "So, we start to watch the Hanza build and start to see that there are some amazing emotional connections to come there as well."

We also have an official synopsis for season 4 that reads: "After the shocking, Continent-altering events that close out season three, the new season follows Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri who are faced with traversing the war-ravaged Continent and its many demons apart from each other. If they can embrace and lead the groups of misfits they find themselves in, they have a chance of surviving the baptism of fire – and finding one another again."
