The Witcher season 2: Netflix 'given green light' to start filming

The Witcher has reportedly been given the go-ahead to film its second season.

Netflix‘s hit fantasy series starring Henry Cavill was one of the first high-profile productions to be rocked by coronavirus after one of its new cast additions, Game of Thrones actor Kristofer Hivju, tested positive for the illness.

Now, according to The Guardian, the streaming service is preparing to resume production now that the UK government has approved new safety rules relating to TV shows and films.

These guidelines, compiled by the British Film Commission and the British Film Institute, will ensure that social distancing and temperature tests will take place on every set.

It is now down to studios and distributors to decide whether filming can go ahead, with an industry source telling the outlet: “This is a green light that signals that the UK is open for business again for film and high-end TV production.”

The Independent has contacted the streaming service for comment.

The Witcher, based on source material written by Andrzej Sapkowski, follows a monster hunter in a world known as The Continent.

Showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich recently announced the new season will introduce a big timeline change following fan criticism.

Hissrich explained the decision in a Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything), saying: “The narrative structure was put in place so that we could tell Geralt’s short stories (the foundation of the whole Witcher world, in my opinion), while Ciri and Yennefer could also be a part of the action.

The show is expected to return to Netflix in 2021.
