The Witcher reviews: First reactions say Netflix show's battle scenes 'make Game of Thrones' look awful'

Early reviews of Netflix‘s big new series, Game of Thrones-style adaptation The Witcher, have finally arrived.

The new series stars Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, the main character who hunts monsters in a world known as The Continent.

In the show, he’ll team up with a powerful sorceress and young princess – here played by Anya Chalotra and Freya Allen, respectively – to battle inter-dimensional demons.

Netflix will release all eight episodes five days before Christmas and, while full reviews are embargoed until then, the first reactions have popped up on Twitter.

One review read: “I’ll have more to say about it when the embargo drops, but [The Witcher is] well-cast, smartly-structured, and nicely paced. Good, solid pulp-fantasy nonsense.”

Another tweeted that “the look of the show is solid” and hailed the “insane” fight choreography, while one critic claimed the battle scenes outdo the ones featured in Thrones.

“The fight scenes In The Witcher  makes Game of Thrones' fights look awful," they wrote.

“First fight Geralt gets into is beautifully savage,” another viewer wrote. “The blend of swordplay and Geralt’s signs is perfection... I’ve watched this fight scene four times already. You’re in for a treat.”

The Witcher will be available to stream on Netflix on 20 December. The streaming service recently made a big announcement about the future of the novel and video game adaptation.
