The Wire star Michael K. Williams has been found dead in his New York apartment aged just 54.
The American actor, who played Omar Little in the HBO drama series, was discovered inside his Kent Avenue penthouse on Monday afternoon, reports suggest.
Sources told The New York Post that ‘ drug paraphernalia ’ was also found inside the property, sparking fears of an overdose.
The five-time Emmy nominee, who had previously spoken out about his struggle with addiction issues, was allegedly discovered by his nephew.
No cause of death has yet been confirmed.
After the shock news broke, tributes began flooding in for the talented TV star who was also famous for his role as Albert "Chalky" White on the HBO series Boardwalk Empire.
Fellow Wire castmate Isiah Whitlock Jr. wrote: "Shocked and saddened by the death of Michael K. Williams. One of the nicest brothers on the planet with the biggest heart.
"An amazing actor and soul. May you RIP. God bless."
Filmmaker James Gunn has paid tribute to Williams, describing him as among the "most gentle souls I've ever met".
He wrote: "Michael K Williams, in addition to being one of the most talented actors around, was also one of the kindest, sweetest, most gentle souls I've ever met. This is heartbreaking. My thoughts are with all those who loved him."
Another Twitter user added: "This is horrible. This breaks my heart. Truly a phenomenally talented actor. Such a loss. #RIPMichaelKWilliams."
A second posted: "Incredible and very versatile actor. Always loved him, his role in boardwalk empire and the wire."
While a third upset fan tweeted: "He made ‘The Wire’ - he was the best character in it. This is very upsetting. RIP Michael."
Williams also played supporting roles in a large number of films and television shows including Gone Baby Gone, 12 Years A Slave, When They See Us and When We Rise.
