Writer and director Simon Stone’s The Wild Duck, a reworking of Ibsen’s 19th century classic, transfers to Perth, following successful seasons in Sydney, Melbourne, Norway, Holland, and the United Kingdom.
Hjalmar Ekdal’s father was rich until scandal cast his family into poverty. He now lives in a tiny flat with his father, wife and daughter. Meanwhile Gregers Werle has just returned to town with some unfinished business that could shatter the world that Ekdal has built.
Stone has stripped back the retelling, allowing the action to unfold in quick, unpredictable scenes. Trapped behind glass, it seems there is no escape for these characters and the audience become voyeurs to the bittersweet family portrait.
