The Wild Beyond by Piers Torday – review

I have been looking forward to reading this book ever since I discovered that The Last Wild was the first book of a trilogy and it didn’t disappoint me. I am just a bit sad now that I will probably never meet Kester Jaynes and his amazing friends, both animal and human, again.

The book opens when the people let on Premium are being encouraged to set off for another planet as the world as we know it is coming to an end. The mouse that has been entrusted with the vital information which could save the planet cannot be found and Kester, whose mission it is to save the animals, is beginning to lose his conviction that he can do so.

The Wild Beyond

Kester responds to a haunting call and enters the river and swims out to sea where he hears the message from the last whale left alive. The meeting with the whale is absolutely beautifully written and you will want to read it more than once.

In a desperate last ditch attempt to fulfil his mission Kester sets off on a perilous journey to Faraway where he believes that there is a possibility that life on earth might be renewed. On the island he meets someone who throws light on the villain of the trilogy, Selwyn Stone.

I loved this book as much as I did the other two but here the message about how fragile our world is even stronger. I never thought I would be bowled over by a story with talking animals, but I was and I even felt really emotional about the cockroach. The book is really gripping. You will love Kester’s close friends Polly and Aida, even though they are so different.

Even though there is so much despair in the trilogy there is also hope. Read the three books yourself to be totally and excitingly absorbed and to stretch your imagination further than you thought possible.
