The Wheel of Nottingham will not be returning to the city this year - and this is why

This time last year the Wheel of Nottingham had taken up position in Old Market Square - but this year it's notable by its absence.

The 60m Ferris wheel, which gives passengers panoramic views of the city and further afield, won't be a fixture in 2020 so no one will be getting a bird's eye of the top of the Council House or partaking in Love is In the Air, the Valentine's speed dating event.

The touring attraction has visited Nottingham three out of the past four years - usually to coincide with Light Night and half-term in February.

Had it been here it would have taken a lashing from Storm Ciara on Sunday but currently the 365-ton landmark is in sunnier climes, 4,000 miles away in Saudi Arabia.

Last year the Mellors Group, owners of the wheel, was awarded a five-year contract by the General Entertainment Authority in Saudi Arabia to organise and create the world’s largest touring entertainment event, working closely with clients to commission some of the largest touring rides in the world.

A council spokesman said it would have been difficult to have the wheel in the Square this year due to maintenance work on the terraces and some of the Light Night installations - particularly the projection onto the Council House.
