The West Ham squad numbers available to Albian Ajeti should he complete £8m transfer

West Ham want to strengthen their striker department with the signing of Albian Ajeti from Basel and the Hammers are believed to be closing in on an £8m plus add-ons.

The club's striker core has undergone a revamp this summer having sold Marko Arnautovic and Lucas Perez, released Andy Carroll and loaned Jordan Hugill to QPR for the season.

As it stands, only club-record recruit Sebastien Haller and Javier Hernandez, who is in the final year of his contract, are the two sole out and out strikers available to Manuel Pellegrini. Michail Antonio has also been used up front in pre-season as a third option but the Hammers manager wants another forward.

Should he arrive, Ajeti will be the sixth signing of the summer in east London following Goncalo Cardoso, Sebastien Haller, Pablo Fornals, David Martin and Roberto to the club.

Cardoso's arrival was announced on Tuesday afternoon and he has taken the number 20 shirt, previously work by Andriy Yarmolenko who has taken the number seven jersey following the departure of Marko Arnautovic to Shanghai SIPG.

Should Ajeti arrive in east London, which the club is increasingly confident will happen, what squad number could he potentially take? Have a look below:

14 - Pedro Obiang has left the club this summer and joined Sassuolo in Italy, meaning his old number 14 squad number is now vacant.

17 - Javier Hernandez was West Ham's number 17 as his favoured number 14 was unavailable as Obiang had it. Hernandez was handed the number nine earlier this summer so his 17 is now available if Haller.

25 - This number has been vacant for more than a year as the last person to wear it was former goalkeeper Joe Hart when he was on loan at the Hammers for the 17/18 campaign.

27 - Lucas Perez leaving the club earlier this summer for Alaves means his old number 27 is now available for a new player to take on and hopefully make a better impact in than the Spaniard did.

28 - Here's a throwback for you. The last West Ham player to don the number 28 was striker Jonathan Calleri, who flopped in east London in 2016/17.  Roger "The Relegator" Johnson also wore the 28 and it was Manuel Lanzini's first squad number too.

29 - The 29 shirt was occupied by striker Toni Martinez but he left the club earlier this summer after failing to break through regularly to the first team.

36 - the last player to wear the number 36 in the first team was Domingos Quina and he only used it once.  Other players to wear 36 include Wayne Bridge and Blair Turgott.
