The Welsh Premiership champions Merthyr RFC are getting a new clubhouse

Plans for a new clubhouse for Merthyr RFC have been approved.

The Welsh Premiership champions lodged a planning application for a new facility at The Wern, Penlan View, in Ynysfach, earlier this year.

The new facility, which will hold private and public social functions, has been approved by Merthyr Tydfil Council through “delegated powers” – which meant a decision from its planning committee officials was not needed.

Up until now the Merthyr RFC’s clubhouse has been based on Dynevor Street – more than half a mile from pitch where home games are played.

Club officials said the new clubhouse would employ two people full time and eight people part time.

As part of the scheme,  Merthyr RFC will acquire the grassed bank located between The Wern and Penlan View.

Prior to the scheme’s approval, residents had question club officials about the plans during a drop-in event in May.

Concerns included parking issues on match days as well as potential noise disturbances.

However,  Merthyr RFC sought to allay those fears by saying it would be working with council officers about parking. And the club also said it had very clear standards about the behaviour it expected from clubhouse users.

It also said there were plans to create a ladies darts team and hold a weekly bingo evening at the venue too.
