The Welsh church set to be transformed to give young homeless people somewhere to live

Young homeless people could find themselves living in a Swansea church in the future under a scheme to help some of those who are most in need of help.

United Reformed Church in Carmarthen Road could be transformed into premises as living accommodation for up to 14 homeless young adults aged 16 to 21.

A pre-application inquiry form has been submitted to Swansea Council asking for its views on the plans.

The application will be submitted by Pobl Housing Association which will lease and operate the facility.

The project is financed by the Welsh Government and has been operated by Pobl at another site in Swansea for several years.

It is a three-stage process which seeks to move young adults into permanent living accommodation.

The first stage is to move homeless young adult into emergency living accommodation.

From emergency accommodation they will move into short-term accommodation such as bed and breakfast accommodation.

Finally, they will be moved into the former church.

The application site will provide self-contained living accommodation for each resident.

There will be no ‘live in’ or full-time support staff in the premises, planning documents state, but support staff will call to the site daily to support and assist occupiers.

This could include assisting with housing, health and financial needs.

It is not the only scheme which is being pursued to help the homeless in Swansea at the moment.

In Gorseinon , David Tiley is transforming a double decker bus into a mobile homeless shelter, which will also be equipped with a toilet and a kitchen.

The BAYS Project helps and advises all homeless 16 and 17 year olds and 18 to 20-year-olds without dependent children.

Housing and social service staff will work together with the Barnardo's charity and other young persons' organisations to provide the best support possible for young homeless families and young people.

They can be found at 47 The Kingsway, Swansea, SA1 5HG or contacted by calling 01792 460007.
