The Welsh beaches you can get to by train to make the most of the heatwave

When Wales is enjoying scorching weather, there's no better place to head than to the coast to soak up the rays and enjoy a cooling dip in the sea.

But if you haven't got a car - or don't fancy a l,ong hot drive - then you can reach many of our beautiful sandy locations by train.

So leave the four wheels at home and avoid getting stuck in the holiday traffic by taking the train to one of the following beaches...

South Wales

Barry Island

Would this really be a list of Welsh beaches without mentioning Barry? Barry Island train station means you can easily reach the seafront. Journeys from local cities are as short as half an hour from Cardiff and under an hour from Newport.

Famous for its Gavin & Stacey links, Barry Island provides plenty of family fun with its pleasure park and palm trees giving it its nickname Barrybados.

Llantwit Major Beach

A half hour walk from the train station, Llantwit Major Beach sits on the Glamorgan Heritage Coast.

The beach is home to rock pools, cliff walks and rare wildlife including Britain’s smallest butterfly. It sits on the edge of a historic town with a good range of restaurants pubs and independent shops.

Rhossili Bay

Voted Wales’ best beach in 2018, Rhossili Bay is a dog-friendly three mile stretch of coastline.

Rhossili Bay can be reached by getting a train to Swansea then hopping on a local bus to take you straight to the beach. The bay is at the western end of the Gower peninsula, known for its beautiful beaches.

West Wales

Tenby beaches

Tenby is home to three beaches - Tenby North, Castle and Tenby South Beach. All are a short walk from Tenby’s train station.

Non locals might recognise Castle Beach, as the fortress has been used as a filming location for BBC’s Sherlock. The seaside town is home to classic pastel coloured houses.

Saundersfoot Beach

The beach is set less than a half hour walk from the train station in Pembrokeshire.

The beach is popular among families, particularly because its shallow water allows for safe swimming. This Blue Flag beach is renowned locally for its New Years Day swim, which supports local charities.

Aberystwyth Beach

Set on the edge of the cosmopolitan town Aberystwyth, the seafront is a lovely stretch with a castle and war memorial at one end and a cliff railway at the other.

The houses overlooking the beach are pastel coloured and further in you can find cafes, bars and restaurants.

A spot that has visitors coming back time and again plus it's no more than 10-minute stroll from the station.

North Wales

Barmouth Beach

Located in Gwynedd, Barmouth is a top seaside resort in Snowdonia. Its beach, Abermaw, has stunning views looking over Cardigan Bay.

You can get to Barmouth Beach by hopping on the train to Barmouth, and then it is a short three-minute walk to the sand.

Colwyn Bay Beach

Colwyn Bay Beach, also known as Rhos-on-sea, is a popular Victorian seaside resort.

The promenade extends from Old Colwyn to Penrhyn Bay. The main beach is famous for its watersports activities. You can kayak, windsurf and sail to your heart's content.

The train station is a 20-minute walk from the beach.

Talacre Beach

A 13-minute walk from Prestatyn Station, Talacre Beach in Holywell is part of an award winning holiday resort. The sandy beach showcases a grade II listed lighthouse and Talacre has all sorts of attractions - from bars and pubs to play areas for the kids.
