The Weeknd will be playing the halftime show at the 2021 Super Bowl, it has been anounced.
NFL, Pepsi and Roc Nation have revealed that the three-time Grammy Award winner will perform at the 7 February event, which will take place at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida.
Speaking about his appointment, Canadian singer The Weeknd – real name Abel Makkonen Tesfaye – said: “We all grow up watching the world’s biggest acts playing the Super Bowl and one can only dream of being in that position.
"I’m humbled, honoured and ecstatic to be the centre of that infamous stage.”
The Weeknd is best known for his hit songs “Can’t Feel My Face” and “Blinding Lights”.
His most recent album, After Hours, was released in March 2020.
Commenting on the news, Roc Nation founder Jay-Z said: “The Weeknd has introduced a sound all his own."His soulful uniqueness has defined a new generation of greatness in music and artistry.
"This is an extraordinary moment in time and the Pepsi Super Bowl LV Halftime Show is going to be an extraordinary experience with an extraordinary performer.”
This year’s Super Bowl halftime show was played by Shakira and Jennifer Lopez.
Previous musicians to have performed at the NFL event include Lady Gaga, Bruce Springsteen, Katy Perry and Beyoncé.
