The Weeknd releases highly disturbing graphic video for ‘Too Late’

The Weeknd has released a new music video fit for Halloween, to accompany his song “Too Late”.

The visuals – directed by Cliqua – are preceded by an NSFW warning, which makes sense once the story begins.

Two women, both wearing facial bandages from plastic surgery, are driving along a highway when they come across the disembodied head of The Weeknd, which he lost in the video for “Your Eyes”.

Instead of being alarmed, they are delighted and take the head home to their mansion, where they seek out a body to match it with. Things get gory – and incredibly weird – very quickly.

“Too Late” was included on The Weeknd’s fourth studio album After Hours, released in March.

The record received praise from critics and produced the hit single “Blinding Lights”, which has received more than 1.5bn Spotify streams.

The Independent’s review said: “Before ‘I Can’t Feel My Face’, The Weeknd had established himself as a cult R&B figure thanks to his 2011 mixtapes, including House of Balloons and Echoes of Silence. There, he revelled in a hedonistic shadowland of his own making; singing in that piercing falsetto about his lack of feeling, and his inability to love or be loved. On After Hours, he still delves into a sadboy persona but there’s a tinge of remorse that runs through, in comparison to the cold and often cruel tone of earlier cuts.”

It added: “Like Starboy, there’s a hefty Eighties influence here, although for the most part, After Hours abandons the danceability of its predecessor in favour of moody introspection. This is the music you listen to when the party’s over.”
