The weekend Covid breaches after officers catch several households watching Six Nations Games together

People thought they could get away with heading to a mate's house to watch the Six Nations games on Saturday night, but police had other ideas.

Continuing their "proactive" approach to clamp down on people flouting the coronavirus regulations, officers broke up gatherings on Saturday night including a birthday party in Swansea.

Nine people were handed fines on Saturday night after they were caught watching the England rugby match at a friends house. South Wales Police broke up the group - from several households - in the Uplands area of Swansea.

They tweeted: "Nine fixed penalty notices issued for breaching Covid [regulations] as they had attended their friends house, from several households, to watch England lose in the rugby."

Further up the Swansea valley, in Ynystawe, officers issued half a dozen fixed penalty notices to people attending a birthday party at someone's home.

The guests were discovered to be from different households.

In Merthyr, officers from the force were called out to a Covid breach and issued another six fines as people gathered to watch the rugby together.

Officers tweeted: "Going to watch a Six Nations game and have a drink is not a reason to be inside someone else's house."

The force was out across south Wales on Saturday ahead of the Six Nations rugby and checking people were complying with the coronavirus regulations in place as Wales remains in a level four lockdown.

On Friday night, more than a dozen people at a party held at an AirBnB house were given fines and one woman faced further action after allegations of obstructing a police officer.

While on Saturday afternoon, police stopped cars driving to Penarth Marina after complaints about people driving to Cardiff Bay.
