
May 6: PBOC conducts outright reverse repos
To maintain sufficient liquidity in the banking system, the People’s Bank of China will conduct 300 billion yuan ($43.9 billion) in outright reverse repurchase operations through an interest rate bidding mechanism with multiple clearing prices. The operations have a three-month term and mature on Aug. 5.
May 8-9: Philippines hosts ASEAN summit
The 48th ASEAN Summit will be held in Cebu province, the Philippines, from May 8 to 9. As the 2026 chair, the Philippines has set the theme as “Navigating a Shared Future,” focusing on peace, security, emerging threats, and maritime cooperation within the ASEAN Community framework.
May 8-10: Beijing high-tech expo kicks off
The 28th China Beijing International High-Tech Expo will run at the National Convention Center until May 10, featuring exhibitions and trade promotion activities. The 50,000-square-meter event will host over 800 domestic and international enterprises and institutions.

May 9: Venice Biennale opens
The 61st Venice Biennale runs from May 9 to Nov. 22 in Venice, Italy, with participation from 99 countries. Titled In Minor Keys, the exhibition theme was set by the late chief curator Koyo Kouoh. It highlights improvisational, understated and often overlooked moments that fall outside conventional notions of productivity.
May 9: 2027 Asian Cup draw rescheduled to May in Riyadh
The draw for the final tournament of the 2027 AFC Asian Cup, originally set for April 11, has been postponed to May 9 and will be held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, the host nation. The tournament will take place in Saudi Arabia from Jan. 7 to Feb. 5, 2027.
