The Week Ahead (Aug. 17-23): U.S. Imposes Tariffs on Canadian Goods

Aug. 17: Jiang Zemin centenary

Aug. 17 marks the 100th anniversary of former Chinese leader Jiang Zemin’s birth. Jiang, who was born in Yangzhou in Jiangsu province in 1926, died in Shanghai on Nov. 30, 2022, at the age of 96.

Aug. 17-23: Ecuador president visits China

Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa will pay a state visit to China from Aug. 16 to 23, his first such visit to the country. President Xi Jinping will hold talks with him, while Premier Li Qiang and top legislator Zhao Leji will also meet him. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the China-Ecuador comprehensive strategic partnership.

Aug. 17: South Korea ruling party picks leader

South Korea’s ruling Democratic Party will hold a national convention on Aug. 17 to elect a new chair. The winner will control the party’s nominations for the 2028 parliamentary elections.

Aug. 19: U.S. raises tariffs on some Canadian goods

Starting Aug. 19, the U.S. will impose an additional 50% ad valorem tariff on selected Canadian products, citing what it called Canada’s discriminatory measures in auto and auto-parts trade. According to a White House fact sheet, the tariffs will cover goods including wine, hockey sticks and cement, even if they comply with the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement.

Aug. 19: South Korea tightens leveraged ETF rules

South Korea will impose tougher entry requirements for single-stock leveraged ETFs and ETNs from Aug. 19. In addition to the existing 30 million won ($21,203) minimum margin requirement and three hours of pre-trade education, first-time retail investors must complete simulated trading before investing in domestic or overseas products.

Aug. 19: ‘WALL-E’ opens in mainland China

Disney-Pixar’s animated film WALL-E will open in mainland China on Aug. 19. The Oscar-winning film, first released in the U.S. on June 27, 2008, will debut in mainland Chinese cinemas for the first time.

Aug. 21-30: Chengdu auto show begins

The 29th Chengdu International Auto Show will run from Aug. 21 to 30 at the Western China International Expo City. Organizers say the event will cover 220,000 square meters and feature nearly 120 domestic and overseas auto brands and about 1,600 vehicles.

Aug. 22-26: Beijing hosts humanoid robot games

The second World Humanoid Robot Games will be held in Beijing from Aug. 22 to 26 at the National Speed Skating Oval. Robot table tennis and humanoid robot free fighting, which were side events last year, have been added to the official competition program.
