The ways antisocial dog owners in Cardiff will face £100 fines this autumn

Antisocial dog owners in Cardiff will face £100 fines in Cardiff this autumn.

A new public spaces protection order has been approved which will ban dog fouling in all public places in the city owned or maintained by Cardiff council unless it is immediately removed.

Dogs will also be banned from enclosed playgrounds and schools, and be kept on leads in cemeteries owned or maintained by the authority.

People who are caught without bags of other means of cleaning up after their pets will also face fines.

Maximum spot fines of £100 will be given to dog walkers who breach the order, which could rise to £1,000 if not paid and dealt with by the courts.

The order, approved by Cardiff council on July 18, is expected to be enforced in October.

Warning signs will be put up in Cardiff's public spaces and a social media awareness campaign around the new order will be launched.

The new order, which will not affect people who need a dog to assist with a disability, would replace the previous byelaws which allowed the council to fine people up to £80 for dog fouling.

A previous proposal to ban dogs from all marked sports pitches has been dropped following an outcry from many dog owners in the city.

More than 500 complaints about dog fouling was made to Cardiff council between April 2016 and April 2017.
