The way parents are planning to celebrate Halloween without trick or treat this year

With rising coronavirus cases in Wales making a traditional Halloween unlikely this year, a number of parents have found a lovely way to celebrate without trick or treating.

Following on from hanging rainbows in windows to spread cheer during the pandemic, parents are now being asked to place a pumpkin, or a pumpkin drawing, in one of their windows during the half-term break.

Then, on the evening of October 31, or any other time during the school break, would-be trick or treaters can take part in pumpkin spotting instead.

The idea is that widespread participation will create a neighbourhood pumpkin trail, which kids can follow without needing to knock on doors and risk spreading the virus.

A Facebook group created for the activity, which already has more than 37,000 followers, explains: "Sadly it looks as though our Trick or Treat traditions will not be happening this year due to the safety precautions around Covid-19.

"Therefore we thought it would be a lovely idea to leave a trail of pumpkins outside of our houses, for children to discover (at a safe distance) around their local neighbourhoods."

A number of parents are also planning to dish out sweets to their children for every pumpkin they locate along the way.

The idea, which has gone viral on Facebook, has been adopted by parents across the UK.

One person said: "Lovely idea will for sure be joining in."

Another added: "I've passed this on to my local village group. Fingers crossed"

A third person wrote: "Loving the idea for this year! Certainly will have lasting memories."
