The way housing gets allocated in Liverpool could be set for a shake up

A review is set to take place into how social housing in our region is allocated amid warnings part of the current process could be unlawful.

Property Pool Plus, which is used to allocate social housing in six boroughs in our region, will be part of a larger review of how housing is allocated to the public.

It operates on a banding system based on people's needs but has faced criticism from some families for being difficult to use and leaving them on waiting lists for lengthy periods.

The review will include local councils in our region as well as housing associations, charities and members of the public.

A document describing the scope of the review say some criteria currently used to disqualify applicants from being eligible for homes on Property Pool Plus could be unlawful.

The document says: "There are six band prioritising applicants for an allocating of social rented housing, with those in the most need in the highest band and those in less need in the lower bands.

"These banding arrangements are overly complicated. Some of the disqualification criterion could be deemed to be unreasonable, unlawful, or prejudicial."

The report also criticises the inflexibility of the application periods and the way the system works for properties that have been specifically adapted for people with particular needs.

The review comes amid soaring demand for social housing in our region.

According to the council, the number of families on housing waiting lists in Liverpool alone now stands at 17,873, an 8% increase since 2015.

Members of Liverpool council's housing select committee are set to meet next week to hear more detail about the review at a meeting next week.
