The Waverley paddle steamer won't do any sailings to Wales in summer 2019

The world's last sea-going paddle steamer is a popular attraction, launching sailings to and from the Welsh coast each summer.

But it has now been pulled from service for the first time in 45 years following a string of mechanical problems, reports the Daily Post .

The Waverley has carried more than five million passengers since undergoing a a major refurbishment and every year makes extensive sailings around the country, including across the Bristol Channel to Penarth and around Llandudno and Anglesey.

However, the liner's tour operator, Waverley Excursions, has confirmed it will not embark on any summer sailings this year.

It is thought that around £2m will be needed to replace the boilers on the vessel if it is to sail again next summer.

A fundraising campaign has now been launched by the charity that owns the Waverley - Paddle Steamer Preservation Society - to help fund the repairs.

Paul Semple, general manager of Waverley Excursions said: "The team is deeply disappointed that we are unable to repair the ship's boilers and operate this season despite every effort being made to overcome the challenges presented.

"I know first-hand the fondness that the general public have for Waverley and I know this news will be disappointing for the tens of thousands of passengers who would have sailed with us this year around the UK."

Last year, the Waverley broke down just days before it was due to arrive in Llandudno. The famous ferry broke down following a boiler failure, leaving  scores of day trippers  high and dry in the middle of the river Clyde.

And in 2017, Waverley cruises to and from Wales were cancelled after the paddle steamer crashed into a pier .

But this will be the longest time the Waverley has been withdrawn from service in almost half a century - but she has been temporarily docked a number of time in recent years.

In 2014, the ship was unable to dock at Llandudno due to adverse weather and high winds, leaving over 700 waiting passengers ashore.
