The Wave near Bristol launches on-site campsite

Visitors to an inland surfing lake near Bristol will be able to stay on-site later this year when a campsite dedicated for surfers opens.

The Wave in Easter Compton, South Gloucestershire has started taking bookings for its new accommodation ahead of its launch on April 30.

Each of the 25 safari tents at The Camp is kitted out with beds, a kitchenette with hot water, private toilet, fridge, large balcony area at the front and wood burner.

But while its appearance has impressed fans, who like the idea of being able sleep just metres from the surfing lake, the pricing has been questioned by some, with a minimum stay resulting in a "steep" fee for guests.

Each tent sleeps up to eight people, with a two-night minimum stay in the week and a three-night minimum stay over weekends. Prices start from £105 per tent per night and rise to £200 per tent per night in peak summer season.

It is understood that the minimium stay charge is a result of the site applying set changeover days to help it follow a strict cleaning regime between bookings in order to meet Covid rules.

This means a couple visiting at the weekend at the height of summer would need to pay £600 for their three-night stay, on top of the fee to use the lake.

On The Wave's Facebook page, one person said: "It looks wicked but it’s a bit steep if you’re a couple - costs more than my mortgage monthly payment to come for 3 nights at the weekend."

Another added: "Great concept, but missed the mark, minimum 3 night stays and £450 for a couple, appreciate it is a more reasonable cost with more people, but the minimum stay just stinks really."

The Wave said the safari tents "pay homage to the surfing spirit of adventure" and provide a space to "relax, reset and reconnect".

More information about the accommodation can be found on The Wave's website.
