The warning Jose Mourinho and Tottenham have been given ahead of second leg vs RB Leipzig

Owen Hargreaves believes Tottenham still have a chance of making it through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League, despite losing 1-0 at home to RB Leipzig in the first leg of their last 16 tie.

Spurs were beaten by the Bundesliga side at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with Timo Werner's penalty proving to be the difference on the night as Julian Nagelsmann's side claimed a first leg advantage, with an away goal.

Leipzig had chances to add to their tally, but Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris was in fine form for Tottenham, who had a couple of chances themselves as they looked to try and get back into the game.

And Hargreaves said Spurs can still overturn the deficit in Germany next month, although he had a warning for Jose Mourinho's men.

Harry Winks on how Jose Mourinho is improving him

“They [RB Leipzig] dominated and probably should have had more goals," Hargreaves said, speaking on BT Sport's Champions League highlights programme.

“It took about 60 minutes for Tottenham, [Erik] Lamela and [Tanguy] Ndombele came on and they played really well, but they don’t have the options, with [Harry] Kane and Son [Heung-min] out.

“Their two best players were Hugo Lloris and Giovani Lo Celso, who was outstanding.

“I think they still have a chance in three weeks’ time, but they will have to play better.

“I think they are up against it, and I don’t think people realise how good this Leipzig team is. They will play the same way and they will create chances, the big question is if they are clinical.

“[Dayot] Upamecano will be back from suspension, so they have better players coming back into the side, so I think you would fancy them in the second leg.”

Spurs did have a good chance late on in the game as Lucas Moura headed over from inside the box, but Tottenham were unable to find a way past Peter Gulacsi as the German side left with a 1-0 win.

And Hargreaves admits that there are positives for Spurs to take, but that Mourinho is hampered by the lack of options available to him at the moment.

“It is a good opportunity, but he [Moura] doesn’t have the height obviously. He maybe sees it late, with a player in front of him," he said.

“But [Jose] Mourinho said afterwards he was proud of his players. He said that Lamela hadn’t trained and Ndombele couldn’t have played any longer.

“So there are things to look forward to, but he is right, he doesn’t have the numbers that he desperately needs.”
