The warning about children playing with garden hoses every parent needs to see

With seemingly relentless hot weather and the school holidays coming up parents are being warned about the dangers of gardens hoses.

With the temperatures soaring and the kids bored, a water fight in the garden can be great fun.

However, parents have been warned to make sure they let the water run out of the pipe before letting their little ones anywhere near it to avoid being burned.

When a hose pipe with water still inside is left in direct sun for an extended period of time it will heat up to temperatures that can be scalding - especially to young children.

An extreme example of this happened in 2016 in the USA.

A mum playfully sprayed her toddler son with a hose that had been in direct sunlight only to be horrified after he was left with second-degree burns over 30 percent of his body.

This particular incident happened in the hotter south of the US. According to the state's fire department in areas where daytime temperatures are 37°C+ the water in a garden hose left in the sun can reach 67°C.

Clearly, temperatures in Wales rarely, if ever, get this high but can reach up to 35°C, which could pose a risk to toddlers, babies and pets.

Following the incident in the US firefighters advised that hoses should be left to run for a couple of minutes before spraying onto people or animals.
