'The walls collapsed on her' - Gran, 92, seriously injured after BMW ploughs into living room as she slept

A 92-year-old woman has been seriously injured after a BMW ploughed into her living room as she slept.

Police were called to the incident in White Horse Grove in Westhoughton, Bolton, at about 5.15am this morning (November 28).

Neighbour Jean Partington said she had just woken up when she heard ‘two terrific bangs’.

“I thought it was a bomb,” she said. “It was that loud.

"I went to the window and couldn’t see anything because it was dark. I could hear a voice crying out so rang the police.

"When I went out, all I could see was devastation. It was frightening."

Police, firefighters and an ambulance attended and found the black car fully embedded inside the bungalow where the woman lived.

The woman was taken to hospital with 'serious leg injuries'.

Police have since described her as being in a 'serious condition'.

The horror smash happened at the approach to a mini-roundabout at Chew Moor Lane's junction with Bolton Road.

The BMW crashed through railings outside the pensioner's home before then smashing through her front window.

In a Facebook post, the woman's granddaughter revealed that she had been in bed when the car 'came through into her lounge'.

She added: "The impact was so severe that the internal walls collapsed on her whilst she was in bed."

A 39-year-old man has been arrested and is being questioned on suspicion of driving offences and assault.

A recovery truck eventually removed the BMW from inside the house on Sunday afternoon.

Bricks and rubble could be seen strewn throughout the inside of the bungalow, while a number of possessions and items of furniture were badly damaged.

Mario Akinyemi, who lives in Bolton Road, said he was woken up by 'the lights and noise' from the scene.

"I saw the car had gone through the window," he said.

"It looked pretty awful. The whole car was through the wall."

Another neighbour, Beth Robertson, said she was 'shocked' to see several police cars and a cordon on the street.

“It’s not what you expect to wake up to on a Sunday morning," she said.

"My heart goes out to the woman, I hope she’s going to be okay.”

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "Officers were called to Bolton Road, Westhoughton, just after 5:15am on Sunday 28 November to reports a car had been in collision with a house.

"GMFRS and NWAS also attended.
