Daryl Dixon, the beloved crossbow-wielding hero most recently of Alexandria, Virginia, was killed on Saturday after finally sustaining a bite from a wild, roving zombie. He was 46 years old.
Dixon was fatally bitten on a fateful day in New Jersey, when meeting prospective recruits for the civilized community of Alexandria, which is protected from the zombie outbreak by walls and offered many of the creature comforts thanks to solar power and conservation. When waiting to meet people at a Walker Stalker convention, a female, who appeared normal but was obviously a zombie in disguise, approached Dixon and took a small bite out of his chest.
She was quickly pulled off by onlookers. He was not injured by her wound, but it was enough to infect him with the deadly virus that destroyed 98% of the world’s population. Always magnanimous, Dixon chose not to press charges against the corpse even though he knew he would suffer an awful fever followed by years of shambling around in a fevered quest to devour live flesh.
Dixon was born in the mountains of northern Georgia and struggled in his early life. His mother died in a house fire when he was 12 and he was left in the care of his alcoholic father and his brother Merle, who was in and out of juvenile detention centers. Later in life he reconnected with Merle and the two were drifters when the outbreak that ravaged humanity took over.
After the plague, which reanimated the corpses of the dead, Daryl and Merle took up with a band of traveling survivors outside Atlanta. Daryl quickly became one of their strongest and most popular members, both for his prowess as a fighter and a hunter as well as his conscience and moral code. He was well-known as being integral in the defeat of the vicious dictator the Governor, the scourge of Woodbury who killed his brother Merle, as well as the cannibals of Terminus. On a fruitless quest to reach Washington DC, Daryl and his new clan eventually settled in the civilized community of Alexandria, where Daryl was integral in recruiting new members to the haven, which led to his demise.
Dixon is survived by no one other than his close friends Rick Grimes and Michonne (no last name necessary), potential love interest Carol Peletier, and a slew of gay rumours.
Just kidding, everyone! Daryl is alive and well on The Walking Dead (even though he was captured by Negan’s men in the mid-season finale), but Norman Reedus, the actor that plays him, was actually attacked and bitten by a fan in New Jersey. Some people just can’t tell the difference between television and reality. Get a grip, people, unless you want this obituary to be true and for Reedus to volunteer to have his character killed off.
