Wales World Cup squad will be announced in front of locals at a Rhondda welfare hall

Wales' World Cup squad for the tournament in Qatar will be announced from a welfare hall in the Rhondda. Wales manager Rob Page is returning to his hometown of Tylorstown to announce the Cymru team in front of locals on Wednesday, November 9.

Tickets to watch the announcement in person were offered to the local community and sold out in the first hour. It will be broadcast live across BBC One Wales and S4C at the same time so no-one will miss out on learning who will be making the journey to Qatar this month.

The Rhondda Valleys have strong links to Wales' last World Cup team through Jimmy Murphy. Born in Treharne Street in Pentre, Jimmy took Cymru to the quarter-finals of the 1958 World Cup. This will be Wales' first appearance in the FIFA World Cup since Jimmy led the team all those years ago. The Welfare Hall was built in 1933, in what was then a thriving mining town. Welfare halls were a large part of Welsh culture during the 20th century, funded by the general public and seen as a place of community outside of work and home.

Rob Page will be making the announcement from Tylorstown Welfare Hall, which requires funding for its refurbishment project following recent flood damage. Tickets for the event were offered to the community with all the proceeds going direct to the welfare hall.

Rob will also hold a Q&A with the local audience in attendance following the announcement. Live coverage of the announcement will start from 6.30pm on S4C and from 7pm on BBC One Wales. There will be build-up from the Rhondda throughout the day, where Rob intends to visit various locations ahead of the big announcement.
