The Voice UK's Will.i.am confirms huge format shake-up coming in new series

The Voice UK judge Will.i.am has confirmed the show will feature a huge format shake-up this year after it returned to our screens on ITV.

The singing competition returned earlier this month, but there will be a twist from the usual format which might benefit someone who lost out previously in the show.

The coaches of Anne-Marie and Olly Murs returned for a second series, joining show legends Sir Tom Jones and Will.i.am.

Emma Willis is back as host and this time there will be a slightly different format with some singers given another chance to impress and ultimately win the show and a recording contract with Universal's label UMOD.

The new twist to the contest is called The Callbacks and allows certain contestants another shot to battle it out and earn a place in the semi-finals.

Speaking about the upcoming episodes of the talent show, Will.i.am appeared on Good Morning Britain to speak with co-hosts Susanna Reid and Ed Balls.

Susanna noted that to mark the show’s tenth anniversary, The Voice has added the new feature to ‘add drama to the show’.

The Voice UK judge explained: “We got rid of the Knockouts. Callbacks are really awesome, because it’s a new thing for us to have these contestants compete against each other in a more intimate way, rather than a big spectacle.

“This is a little bit more challenging because singers can see exactly what the competition is doing right in front of them.

“So, if you’re going first, you’re kicking it off, but the last person gets to see exactly what their competition has done. So, you have to step it up. You’re either donezo before it’s over or you get a chance to redeem yourself and really come with the skills.”

Co-host Ed weighed in to compare the new format feature to the Judges Houses round of the fellow ITV talent show The X Factor, saying: “It’s a bit more intimate, personal and you get to be closer with the talent.”

Will.i.am then replied, joking: “What did you say? The what factor?”and Susanna asked: “Is that the show that dares not speak its name?”

Will.i.am replied: “I saw Simon the other day and it's always good to see him. I did America's Got Talent with the Black Eyed Peas and Simon was there.

“It was really good to see him. It’s awesome, but this is The Voice UK we’re talking about now.”
