The Voice UK's Tom Jones gets choked up as teacher, 45, performs after 'finally getting the confidence'

Welsh musical legend Sir Tom Jones became choked up while watching Rachel Modest, a teacher, perform on The Voice. Tom turned around on his red chair for Rachel in the early rounds, Tom also chose Rachel again in The Callbacks taking her through to the semi-finals.

When Rachel performed a powerful performance in the semi-final, on Saturday, October 22, Tom became emotional while watching her. After her performance, he said: "I get emotional just listening to you." and later called her a "tremendous" singer.

Rachel also earned praise from fellow judge Olly Murs and he questioned why Rachel, who is 45 and a special educational needs teacher, had left it so long to pursue her singing. Rachel explained she was "finally getting her confidence" after years of not feeling brave enough to take to the stage.

Will.i.am told Rachel her performance reminded him of growing up going to church. Despite Rachel's emotional performance Tom decided not to take her through to the final, instead choosing Antonia. The other three going through to next weekend's final are David, Mark and Naomi.

After not making it through to the final Rachel said: "I hope have inspired my students at school, I hope they now realise that anybody can do anything if they put their mind to it." Before the semi-final aired Rachel thanked Tom and the other judges for their support on Facebook.

She said: "Part of my journey through the voice was me learning to accept myself and who I was and strive for where I wanted to be. I am truly humbled by the love and support I’m receiving right now. Thank you so much to everyone. To @realsirtomjones for being the most wonderful mentor, @annemarie, @ollymurs and @iamwill for your faith in little old me. I am so blessed!!"

Earlier in the series, Sir Tom reduced his fellow judges and the audience to tears when he performed a song about his late wife.
