It may look like a real uphill struggle for Wales to qualify for the knockout stages of the World Cup now, but fans are making sure spirits stay high thanks to the launch of a vodka to commemorate the country qualifying for the tournament for the first time in 64 years.
Cardiff Distillery and Welsh Football Fans have teamed up to launch a new and exclusive vodka for the World Cup called Wales Away WC22. It takes its inspiration from those epic away trips following the national football team and is endorsed by Welsh cult figure and illustrator A Guy Called Minty.
Only 1,000 of the bottles have been made, all individually numbered, and they feature Wales’s World Cup group games on the label as part of the exclusive artwork. Promotion for the product reads: "To find exactly the right flavour, those behind the spirit infused a blend of ice cold water from the snow on Yr Wyddfa, fibres from Terry Medwin’s 1958 shirt, the tears of Paul Bodin and the pure, undiluted adrenaline of Chris Gunter. Finally, we added mist from the dragon’s breath hanging in the air on a cold night in the Canton Stand."

Commercial director for EatSleep Media, which owns Welsh Football Fans, Dan Harris said: "We wanted to create something special for fans to own as a memento of the first time we’ve reached a World Cup in more than 60 years. It’s been a joy working with Cardiff Distillery and A Guy Called Minty, who all share our passion for Welsh football, and we hope people enjoy toasting our boys’ success in Qatar or even keeping it as an early Christmas present.”
And head distiller at Cardiff Distillery, Ben Carmichael, added: “We wanted to champion a Welsh ingredient that is renowned on a global scale to compliment the achievements of the Welsh National Team, and we found that in our 100% pure sea salt. The intense, clean flavour of this sea salt is the perfect accompaniment to the mellow, sweet caramel, to create a vodka that is both delicious neat and versatile in cocktails.”
Wales go into their final group game against England on Tuesday, November 29, where only a win will be enough for them to qualify, but even then they will still be relying on a draw between Iran and USA. You can purchase the commemorative vodka by clicking here.
