The vital role ex-Swansea City duo played in Korey Smith transfer as former Bristol City man reveals key aim

Korey Smith has revealed Ashley Williams and Tammy Abraham were among those to play a key role in his decision to join Swansea City.

The midfielder became a free agent after being released by Bristol City earlier this month following a six-year stint with the Robins.

Steve Cooper wasted no time in moving for the 29-year-old, and on Friday it was confirmed that Smith had signed a two-year contract with the Swans.

And Smith says striker Abraham - who had a successful loan stint at Ashton Gate during the 2016/17 season - along current Bristol City defender Williams helped to convince him that a switch to the Liberty Stadium would be a positive one.

“I spoke to Ash at Bristol, he had an amazing time here and he had nothing but good things to say, and Tammy was the same,” the new recruit told the club website.

“They all said it was a lovely place to live, a brilliant club with a great stadium and fanbase.

“Obviously everyone around Swansea supports the club so it’s a great place to be.

“I also have friends down here so hopefully that will help me settle in. I can’t wait to get going.”

Smith's exit from Ashton Gate came as a huge disappointment for the Bristol City faithful, with the words of those over the Severn Bridge helping to fill the Jack Army with confidence after Smith completed his move to SA1.

The Swans beat the likes of Cardiff City and Nottingham Forest to the signature of Smith, with other Championship clubs also believed to have shown an interest in the midfielder.

And having been impressed with how Swansea performed during the 2019/20 season, Smith admits he's hoping to make history in the latest chapter of his professional career.

“From the moment the club knew I was available, the manager was on the phone to me, he showed me the project and was really keen to get me through the door," added Smith.

“He told me all about the place, the fans and the stadium. I am really excited to get going.

“The club showed how much they wanted me, there was no messing around.

“I’m already looking forward to getting back down to work, as I’m sure the rest of the boys are. They’ll be chomping at the bit to try and take the next step after getting to the play-offs last season.

“I want to be part of that. The main thing for me is I will always give 100 per cent, I will always leave everything out on the pitch.

“I was at Bristol City a long time and have some great memories with some amazing people, but it is time to move on to a new chapter.

“I just hope I can make history here. Like I say, it’s the start of a new chapter and I am looking forward to doing that in a Swansea City shirt.”
