The Vikings defense has been coming very close to breaking

Defense was never going to be the calling card of this Minnesota Vikings squad, especially with the hiring of the offensive-minded Kevin O’Connell as the head coach.

While it wasn’t going to be the team’s focus, nobody expected the defense to be quite this bad. They have allowed the most yards in the National Football League this season while allowing 30+ points three times this year and less than 20 only twice.

The biggest cause for concern on this Vikings defense is that they are taking the bend, but don’t break moniker a little too literally. This unit is bending way too much, especially in between the 20s. They have been so poor this season that they have allowed 400 or more total yards in each of the last five games.

Allowing yards doesn’t always translate into scoring points, but once you pass a certain threshold, it becomes inevitable that the opposing offense scores points. The levee finally broke on Sunday against the Detroit Lions when the amasses 464 yards and 34 points.

Where do the Vikings go from here? That much is uncertain at this point, but we do know this: they have to make some sort of change to significantly improve the defense. If they don’t, it’s hard to see this team winning any games in the playoffs.
