The view from the Portsmouth camp: 'It’s massive and we have to go there and win'

Portsmouth are targeting nothing but a win when they arrive at the Stadium of Light this weekend.

The League One promotion race will reach boiling point on Saturday when Sunderland entertain rivals Pompey in what will be a massive fixture.

Kenny Jackett's side are the form team of the division right now, winning their last seven league games.

Sunderland handed a slight advantage of Portsmouth and second-placed Barnsley when they drew at Peterborough on Monday, meaning that while both sides have a game in hand on the Tykes, they know they must win on Saturday to keep their automatic promotion hopes alive.

And midfielder Tom Naylor, who scored the vital equaliser in Pompey's 2-1 win over Coventry last time out, admits the three points will be all they're focused on.

“When the fixtures came out last summer, you knew that it was probably going to be a really big game," he said.

“It’s massive and we have to go there and win.

"I’ve got every confidence in the ability of this team to do just that.”

Portsmouth needed late winners to overcome Burton and Coventry over the Easter period, and Naylor is looking to carry that momentum in their final three games of the campaign.

“We’ve taken six points from the two games and we knew in advance that we would need exactly that," he told portsmouthfc.co.uk.

“It doesn’t really matter how we managed to do that – the important thing is that we’ve won them both.

"We’ve taken six points from the two games and we knew in advance that we would need exactly that.

“We just had to get the equaliser against Coventry and then everyone would believe we could get the second.

“I was unmarked, so I had a free header and was able to smash the ball in. It’s nice for me to score another goal. It got us back into the game and then Pits completed the job.

“We’ve just to keep our heads down and believe that we can do this. We’ll certainly be working our hardest.”

Sunderland have all the motivation they need to beat Portsmouth, says Jack Ross
